Privacy policy

Funke Learning is used by schools and their students. This page explains what we collect, why we hold it, and who can see it — in plain language.

The short version

  • We collect what is needed to run a class: who you are, which school you belong to, the courses you build or take, and how you are getting on.
  • We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising on Funke.
  • Student work is visible to the teachers and admins of that student's organisation — not to other schools.

1. Who this policy covers

This policy applies to the Funke Learning web app at app.getfunke.com and the marketing site at getfunke.com. Where a school or organisation signs up its staff and students, that school decides what is taught and what is recorded; Funke processes that information on its behalf.

2. What we collect

  • Account details. When you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and profile picture from your Google account. We never see or store your Google password.
  • Organisation and role. The school or organisation you belong to and your role in it (student, teacher, admin), plus any group or class membership.
  • Course content. Courses, units, lessons, questions, tags and any source material you upload (documents, images, notes) to generate content from.
  • Learning activity. Enrolments, lesson progress, quiz attempts and answers, whiteboard and graphing work, and feedback you submit.
  • Technical data. Standard server logs (IP address, browser type, timestamps, the pages requested) used to keep the service running and secure.

3. Why we use it

  • To sign you in and keep your session secure.
  • To show you your courses and save the work you do in them.
  • To give teachers and admins in your organisation a view of class progress.
  • To generate lesson content, questions and audio when you ask us to.
  • To diagnose faults, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.

4. AI features

Some features send content to Google's AI services so a result can be returned — course generation and question writing use Google Vertex AI / Gemini, and the “Listen” feature uses Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. That means the prompt and the material you point the feature at (for example a lesson you are generating from) are transmitted to Google for processing. Under our Google Cloud terms, this content is processed to serve the request and is not used to train Google's public foundation models.

AI-generated content can be wrong. Teachers should review generated lessons and questions before giving them to students.

5. Cookies

Funke sets one essential cookie, __session, which keeps you signed in. It is required for the app to work and cannot be turned off while you are using it — signing out clears it. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

6. Who can see your data

  • You — your own account, courses and progress.
  • Teachers and admins in your organisation — the courses in that organisation and the progress of students enrolled in them.
  • Funke staff — only where needed to operate or support the service, or where the law requires it.

Organisations are kept separate: people in one school cannot see another school's courses, rosters or student work.

7. Service providers

We host Funke on Google Cloud Platform and use its services to run it: Firebase Authentication (sign-in), Cloud Firestore (the database), Cloud Storage (uploads), Cloud Run and Firebase Hosting (serving the app), and the AI services named in section 4. Data is stored in Google's European region (europe-west1); Google may process it in other regions in the course of providing those services, under its own data-processing terms.

8. Students and children

Funke is provided to students through their school. The school is responsible for deciding that its students may use Funke and for obtaining any parental consent required in its jurisdiction. If you are a parent or guardian and want to know what is held about your child, contact the school first — they administer the account — or write to us at the address below.

9. Keeping and deleting data

We keep account and course data for as long as the organisation keeps using Funke, so that progress and history stay intact across the school year. When an account is removed by an admin, or when an organisation leaves Funke, we delete or anonymise the associated data within 90 days, except where we must keep records longer by law. Backups are cycled out on a rolling basis.

10. Security

Traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and data is encrypted at rest by Google Cloud. Access to production systems is limited to the people who need it. Every request is checked against your session and your organisation before any data is returned. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach affects your data we will notify the affected organisations without undue delay.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or to object to how it is used. The quickest route is your school's Funke admin, who can change roles, correct records and remove accounts directly. You can also write to us at getfunke@unis.org and we will respond within 30 days.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data we will update this page and move the “last updated” date. Material changes will also be announced in the app or by email to organisation admins.

13. Contact
